TOUR13 GHOUL DIR EN GREY

Documentary Blu-ray & DVD 2014.4.23 RELEASE

ABOUT

Why DIR EN GREY continues to take the stage

It has been 15 years since DIR EN GREY made their spectacular debut, and they are still continuing to progress. DIR EN GREY has just announced their fourth video documentary, TOUR13 GHOUL, with footage that documents DIR EN GREY face to face with reality, will be released on April 23, 2014. It features their domestic headlining tour beginning at YOKOHAMA BLITZ on September 18, 2013, where Kyo revealed his self-created, skull-like make-up that gave him the appearance of a ghoul starved for human flesh. The tour's stage production invited audiences into the world of DIR EN GREY, while the band followed their instincts and laid themselves bare for the crowds.
The documentary also includes their month-long American tour, from the fatal shooting at LAX on November 1 for which DIR EN GREY were present, to the looming possibility of cancelling shows due to a tour bus breakdown. The three months of filming captures on video anxiety about their new challenges, unimaginable realities, and a ray of hope at the end of hardship. Why take the stage? —— This is the film that documents the five members who repeatedly ponder this unanswerable question and fight their way through difficulty. Don't miss their words and feelings from the inside.

STORY

  • New Challenges and Whirling Anxiety

“TOUR 2013 GHOUL”, which started on September 18th, 2013, at Yokohama BLITZ and covered 9 cities and 15 shows, earned the dual themes of “mazy” and “instinct”. From the tour’s announcement, fans’ anticipation for the shows rose day by day as they pondered these themes. Cameras followed the band members from before the tour’s start, through rehearsals and setlist discussions as they visualized the start of the tour.

  • Unimaginable Reality

At 9:20 AM on November 1st, 2013, a gunman opened fire at Los Angeles International Airport, killing a TSA agent. At the time, DIR EN GREY had just landed at the airport, and were in the process of passing through immigration. To prevent panicking among those still in the airport, the airport had cut off communications with the outside world. Approximately four hours later, the band finally emerged from the terminal and came face to face with reality, starting their North American tour on a note of uneasiness that only became worse.

  • The Light at the End of the Tunnel

As the three-month “TOUR 2013 GHOUL”, which spanned both Japan and North America, approached its final stages, disaster struck DIR EN GREY on November 20th, 2013. The band’s tour bus, their sole mode of transportation since the first show in Dallas, broke down, leaving them stranded before their performance in Seattle. As the next day’s show drew closer, what did DIR EN GREY decide at this crucial stage of the game?

“Well, I guess it’s okay…” These are convenient words for us in daily life.
Of course, there are times when I use these magic words myself, these words whose real meaning is one of compromise.
This time, I followed the band for approximately two months, through both Japan and North America.
When you spend two months with people, you really begin to feel the drama of their lives. Not just the band, but the people around them. However, I focused on the creativity of the 5 people in this documentary. Every day, I was struck by the band’s unwillingness to compromise. “Well, I guess it’s okay…” is simply not a part of their vocabulary. To be honest, it’s tiring having to be around 5 people like that. But, I was able to experience excitement not normally a part of everyday life, and make something great with them as a result. It was a wonderful experience.
I spent far more time with the band compared to the last documentary, “Tour 12-13 In Situ-Tabula Rasa”. Compared to last time, the distance between us had shrunk, and I was able to capture the band speaking frankly, their unyielding fortitude in times of trouble, and their sense of playfulness.
Compared to the previous documentary, I feel like this one reveals DIR EN GREY’s sense of humor, lifting the lid on a toy box, so to speak. It gives fans who have been with DIR EN GREY since the beginning a chance to see a new side of them, and recent fans a glimpse inside the band.
Thanks to the magic of film, the moments I spent with the band have been made eternal, put into a physical product for everyone to finally see. My hope is that viewers can experience the emotions of it, the laughter and tears.
How will everyone react to it? Happiness? Shock?
There’s really no point in thinking about it, so…
“Well, I guess it’s okay…”
